Audition or present a portfolio to compete for a full-tuition scholarship!

Hosted by the Case Western Reserve University Theater Department, Theater Scholarship Weekend provides prospective actors, directors, playwrights, designers, technicians and stage managers with an opportunity to spend the weekend attending performances on campus, meeting Theater Department faculty and students, and auditioning or interviewing for full- and partial-tuition scholarships.

Overnight accommodations with theater students will be provided on a limited basis, as available. If on-campus accommodations are full, several hotels are located very near campus for those seeking lodging. All meals will be provided.

About the scholarship

Each year, CWRU’s theater department awards four full-tuition scholarships to incoming first-year students who wish to major in theater, and two $10,000 merit scholarships to students who wish to minor in theater. For more information regarding CWRU theater scholarships, visit theater.case.edu/undergraduate-scholarships.

About the weekend

Students attending Theater Weekend are invited to attend theater classes on Friday morning: Introduction to Acting and Acting: Scene Study. A list of class times will be shared with students upon registration for the event.

Prospective students meet faculty and their student hosts Friday at 4 p.m. in the lobby of CWRU's own Eldred Theater. That evening, students will tour the campus and attend a question-and-answer session with current CWRU faculty. Afterward, students can participate in either a design bash with design faculty and students, or an improv session with acting faculty and students.

Saturday morning, prospective students will have the opportunity to audition or present a portfolio as part of our scholarship competition. In the afternoon, students will participate in a question-and-answer session with current CWRU theater students, and will have free time to explore the CWRU campus and the University Circle arts and cultural district.

The weekend is topped off Saturday night with tickets to the undergraduate production, followed by a performance by CWRU’s student improv comedy group, IMPROVment, in the Eldred Theater Black Box.

About CWRU Department of Theater

The Department of Theater at Case Western Reserve University offers education and participation in all aspects of drama, with course offerings in acting, stagecraft, costume design, scene design, directing, dramatic writing, and history, literature and criticism.

Bachelor of Arts students have the opportunity to perform, as well as to serve on the design and technical teams in four fully produced mainstage theatrical productions each year. The low student-to-faculty ratio ensures that students are able to work closely with our faculty of highly accomplished artists and scholars.

As a discipline that is both performing art and humanity, the department treats all performances as artistic and educational experiences, and welcomes the participation of students regardless of their academic majors and career goals.

And recently, CWRU Theater had the groundbreaking for their new theater building which will open in January 2021!  To learn more about the new performing arts center, click here.
